Nice pipes. However….
Here an article that may interest you…. caveat emptor my dear old friend.
Epoxy Reproductions Alert...
For many years, it's been known among long-time meerschaum pipe collectors that there is one or more persons fabricating epoxy reproductions of antique meerschaum pipes using the molds of the originals. One person in America began doing so in the 1970's, but he advertised and sold them openly as epoxy reproductions; another was/is a Brit who either ceased to make them or changed his advertising to indicate that his pipes were not meerschaum, but of epoxy. Others may have joined the fray, because these resin repros are appearing nowadays with greater frequency. The first formal notification of such skulduggery appeared in Rapaport, Collecting Antique Meerschaums, in which I identified a reproduction in resin best described as a blood-red pre-colored motif of a man carousing with several girls, supposedly signed by Gustav Fisher (wrong spelling), a pot metal shank band and an orange plastic mouthpiece. One American collector owns at least six of this reproduced pipe that were offered for sale in various venues from as little as $100 to as much as $600.
Since that time, the following believed-to-be resin motifs have appeared at auctions, at pipe shows, and on e-bay: (1) the "Nude Victory," a woman on the front of the bowl, her arms outstretched over her head; (2) "woman and child," two of which were recently offered on e-bay (http://cgi.ebay.com/PIPE-motif-mother-and-child-/260764388884?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb6c4 ce14#ht_500wt_1156, one in the US and one in the UK) whose shank configuration and push stem are most unusual for an "antique" meerschaum pipe, and most recently (3) the bust of a Norseman or viking, whose telltale signs of new-age construction are a latticed pot-metal shank band and an orange plastic mouthpiece, both characteristics reminiscent of the exact same components of the pipe reported on in Rapaport's book. This one is currently offered by a UK seller at: http://cgi.ebay.com/190520860390#ht_500wt_1156.
What is not known is whether the sellers of these pipes are doing so wittingly or whether they are totally unaware of and unfamiliar with what they own. Until further discovery--if discovery ever occurs--it is best that caveat emptor and "being forewarned is being forearmed" be the watchwords to buyers.
