"As far as the Charatan pipe is concerned, it was purcahsed by Lane Ltd back in the early 70's, then, when Dunhill purchased Lane, they inherited the Charatan company. Unfortunately, by that time the principal Charatan pipe maker, Mr Jones, was already working producing the James Upshall pipe together with Colonel Barnes, who was the Managing Director of the Charatan Pipe Company.
Barry is the sole producer of the James Upshall and Tilshead pipes and currently produces approximately 1,200 pipes per annum. They are all handmade and contradicting the rumours you ahve heard, the James Upshall pipe does not have any fills, nor sand pits. This is the reputation that the James Upshall name has been built on. The so called seconds is teh Tilshead pipe, which will show some pits and imperfections but since I have taken over the company in 1996 I have never seen even a Tilshead being filled. The pipes are finished to a very high standard and what you call bad workmanship due to uneven bowl ios only because when you handcut a bowl one of the shoulders will always be fractionally unsymetrical depending on if the artisan is left or right handed."

Charatan 在 后面在70 年代 初期被Ltd Lane收购。之后Dunhill 收购了Ltd Lane, 自然的他们继承了Charatan 公司。不幸 地, 当时主要Charatan 烟斗制作者, Barry Jones, 已经跟Charatan董事长Colonel Barnes一起作生产 James Upshall 烟斗。

在下愚见：世事无绝对，所谓的“完美”其实只是相对的概念，绝对的完美本身就是不符合逻辑的。某种不完美性真是手工斗的魅力之一，就好像 Mr. Jones 提到的，因为工匠是左撇子或右撇子的缘故，开斗胚时肩膊自然倾斜而导致斗钵并非完全绝对对称的例子一样。也许生产力条件的原因，国外发达国家使用机器生产的产品，都不难成就质量精准、成本低廉，而是 “handmade”这个词在外国人心目中的感觉，远远比我们要高。我认为这是生产力发展到一定阶段，人的素质提升到某种层次，很自然地回到以人为本，人的价值大于一切的概念。
惊叹！！！难怪Charatan的爱好者会对Charatan如此着迷！！！
对Dunhill如此不屑一顾。认为Dunhill毁掉了Charatan。只认同被Dunhill收购前的Charatan。
并称：Never forget ... Dunhill made “A”perfect pipe。Charatan made perfection in “pipes”。
