I have several of these Peterson system pipes. The basic concept is the design of the " well" , at the bottom of the shank mortise. Any moisture or fluid produced by the burning tobacco and your mouth, will be accumulated in the well, thus gives your a drier and better smoke.
These system pipes are basically " Army mounts" , so can be taken apart while still warm. Simply take it apart and swab the well dry with tissue or Q tip and reassemble the pipe, and you are good to go. Again, since the design has not been improve since it was patented some 100 years ago….. I know many pipe smokers are not too crazy to own one, because it does take some to get use to.
Most people I know just hate "P" lip… However. if you are buying a Peterson System pipe without "P" lip, then it is not a real "Peterson System pipe".
I smoke all my V in briar wood pipes, L only in bog oak pipes and all Aromatic in meerschaum pipes.
System pipes are not for everyone, some love it and some hate it, to each his own. A must have for Peterson pipe fans
