Sorry to hear about your pipe.
If the bowl is cracked, there is not much you can do but to repair it. I will use two parts epoxy to reinforce the broken bowl, after it dries, the excess epoxy can be pealed off. Dry sand it again to even out. Some beeswax to protect the cleaned surface.
Always remember to apply some wax for repaired meerschaum, this will help to prevent absorption of moisture from the air too.
Since yours did not crack in the smoke chamber, I think it is safe to smoke away.
From my research, almost 99 % of calabash pipe bowls available now are of pressed meerschaum. Other materials used for the bowls include clay, asbestos and plaster. Sellers often tell notoriously inaccurate descriptions regarding their products. Knowingly or unknowingly !
Chances are you have bought one of those pressed meerschaum ( keep your fingers crossed) .
There is only one seller who offers real meerschaum bowls as far as I know.
Caveat emptor !
Theoretically, calabash pipes do one thing which is to cool the smoke in the chamber first before traveling to the mouth.
Will a real meerschaum bowl help to further provide coolest and driest smoke is indeed debatable. |
