Cake, as a carbon deposit, tends to build at different rates depending on the tobacco smoked , how often you smoke and how often you relight during your smoke.
Cake is hard, brittle, porous, dark and black! Cake is a maintenance issue.
To trim the cake, I use sandpaper. I sand it down periodically with a rolled tube of sand paper. Just wrap some sandpaper around a dowel or your pinky and give the inside of the bowl a nice sanding. You can adjust it to fit all sizes, nice and easy, cheap and fast and...your pipes will love you.
If you do it correctly and often enough, it will give an even and nice finish to the bowl.
