Eyup Sabri is an artist.............[转帖]
Eyup Sabri is a name that many pipe collectors have heard, though few collectors are intimately familiar with his work. For die hard meerschaum pipe collectors, a pipe by Sabri is the grail, given the quality and rarity of his production. Making just a handful of pieces annually, Sabri's pipes are rarely available, especially outside of his native Istanbul, Turkey.
Sabri is unlike any other meerschaum carver currently working. His work is far more analogous to the great carvers in 19th century Vienna and Paris than it is to contemporary meerschaum production in Turkey. As I've said here before, we are currently witnessing a renaissance in the quality and craftsmanship of Turkish carved meerschaum pipes, principally fueled by the work of Baglan, Sevket, Medet Kara (Gulel) and Bekler (CAO). These gentlemen are some of the finest meerschaum carvers and craftsmen to come out of Turkey. Though their work is at times artistic, they are not artists-- they are craftsmen. Eyup Sabri is an artist. While his technical skill is breathtaking, it is his vision, composition and, quite simply, his artistry that truly sets him apart.
Stylistically, Sabri treads an interesting line between influences derived from Western art, including influences from the great Viennese meerschaum artists, and influences from traditional Turkish and Arabic art. Though his work could from one perspective be seen as highly Romantic in the 19th century Viennese vein, there are enough elements that grounds him, and displays his artistic background, in Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern art. For example, he often uses arabesque patterns, knot designs and architecturally inspired lattice designs, which are all Arabic and Islamic artistic elements.
Essentially, Sabri leans on the work of other artists and from a variety of mediums, then adds his own personal styles and themes. Perhaps this is most evidenced in his larger compositions. Whereas the other major meerschaum carvers may simply make a larger version of something they are already facile with, Sabri creates a scene or an overall composition that is, conceptually, understood as a whole. His vision for his art is far more holistically conceived than it is for most meerschaum carvers.
