[转帖] For My First Pipe You Would Recommend.....

Q: I am wondering what is best for my first pipes, higher quality pipes for a better smoke experience or not to worry about the pipe itself but be concerned with the tobacco. Or is it both?

I have read read read, and asked shop owners but am getting real confused with what route to go.

Any pipe suggestions? Tobacco? This will be my first experience both with a pipe and with smoking.

A1: Tobacco choice is a personal matter. You may well hate what I love. The only thing to do is keep trying tobaccos until you find one you like, and it may take several tries.
As far as pipes go, I recommend you buy a medium priced pipe of a quality brand. Also, remember that pipes need a break in period, so don't expect a great smoke from the start. Good luck, and enjoy whatever you get.

A2: I went through exactly the same thing when I first started smoking a pipe. I started off with a Butz Choquin Jumbo full bent. I explored the world of Peterson and tried Stanwells and Bjarnes.

For a pipe priced at the entry level, my highest enjoyment came from the Stanwells and Bjarne. Looking back on these early purchases, I wish someone had told me I had options. You do!!

If you are now or think you will be a serious pipe smoker, I'd like to suggest that you look into the Italian brand pipes. Comparing the Italian pipes I have in my collection now to the pipes I started with, the difference is like night and day.

I'm not suggesting that you dive in and buy a $500 Castello Greatline, but, you could buy a Mastro De Paja, Moretti, Brebbia and several other Italian pipe carvers who offer pipes at reasonable prices.

……

For tobacco suggestions, number one on my list is stay away from the aromatics. These are not usually high grade tobacco and some of the toppings that are used for flavor can cause a lot of tongue bite.

I would suggest starting off with a very mild tobacco such as Frog Morton or Dunhill Early Morning. These are really nice IMHO, Latakia tobacco blends that smoke cool and don't have a lot if any additives.

You might want to try some of the mild Virginia blends from McClelland such as their bulk tobacco #5100. This is one of my all day tobaccos and I strongly recommend it.

Moisture content of tobacco can be a killer to your tongue. Steam is generated by the moist tobacco which is the number one cause of tongue bite. My rule of thumb is if you can pinch the tobacco together and it sticks in a clump, it's too wet. I let the tobacco dry out on a Chinet paper plate or on a piece of brown paper towel. How long? Depends on the tobacco. The flakes dry out faster than the twists do. If you follow my rule of thumb at first, experiment for yourself and find just that right level for the tobacco and the pipe your smoking it out of.

Use a pipe cleaner often when your smoking a pipe. Since I learned to do this and watching the moisture content of the tobacco, my pipe smoking enjoyment jumped 10 points at least. Don't buy a pipe that you can't run a cleaner through without taking the pipe apart. Use of a cleaner while smoking can practically eliminate the moisture in your pipe, leaving a cool smoke as your reward. Smoke slow, don't let your pipe heat up, if it does, let it cool down even if this means relighting, nothing wrong with that. Sorry, but I got on a roll and didn't mean to get so lengthy...Have fun.

A3: There is much good advice above, however don't get too caught up in the mystique of it all at this stage. My late grandfather who smoked a pipe all his life until he died at 87 years had no time for it all, he used to say "just buy a decent pipe, stuff tobacco in it and smoke the dammed thing" That was probably the best advice I have ever been given and I have never forgot it.
Basically buy a medium priced pipe and try different tobaccos in it until you find one you like. I never like to recommend any one type or blend, because everyone is different and what one person might like another might hate. In one tobacco database I know of there are 1965 different pipe tobacco blends listed so there is no lack of choice.
One thing I would say however is be wary of Latakia blends to begin with - I enjoy them a lot and they are among the most enjoyable of blends - but many non pipesmokers detest the smell of them. My wife hates me smoking them in the house and I usually end up on the back porch or smoking them while I'm out walking.
In any case good luck and enjoy your pipe.
