I have few vintage meerschaum pipes that came with the similar problem.
A particular one, came with three types of sewing thread, two white and one blue, the blue thread measures about 8 inches in length. All heavy coated with beeswax ,tar and who knows what …
After I cleaned the pipes, I found the tenon was in good condition but the shank had enlarge over the years (this particular pipe was about 120 years}.
Finally, I found a plastic tube that can fit the shank and take the tenon. I sanded the tenon smooth.
I used two parts epoxy to glue the tube to the shank, hopefully that will permanently fix the problem.
So far so good.
But be warned!
The pipe resell value will be affected as it is no longer original.
The other less invasive method using a sewing thread will be recommend if resale value is the consideration.
I have an old Paul Fisher, I just use new thread with beeswax and it seems to work fine too.
Other materials I have tried and find okay is the white plumber's teflon tape.
