近来翻看了村中一些旧贴，发现有不少村友都曾提到一个词--------平衡。
不知大家对烟斗的“平衡”如何理解？

Dear Citic,

Since the appearance of a pipe is somewhat subjective to one's artistic preference, I would say that a pipe is well-balance as long as it sits comfortably in one's mouth.  

Nothing is worse than having to forcefully maintain the grip of the pipe whilst smoking.  It not only tires the jaw but it also makes a relaxed moment into something of a hard labour.  I guess that is the main reason I have not grown fond of Italian pipes, as I find them tend to be quite big in size and heavy on weight for me to swallow, so to speak.

Having said that, as from an artistic point of view, I have found myself fallen completely in love with the shapes created by some of the great Danish masters.  Balance, in this sense simpy implies to the free flow of grains around a pipe.  Being able to manipulate the grains to complement the shape is a true art indeed and needless to say, very pleasing to the eye.  

Again in my personal point of view, a truly well-balanced pipe, should be one that is balanced in the mouth as well as it is beautifully grained as a whole.  It has to please both senses of taste and sight and that alone makes pipe-smoking an endless journey, not yet adding the wonderful art of tobacco blending into the equation.

谢谢Ed兄的指教，小弟通过浏览一些旧贴，总结一些村友提及的内容，感觉烟斗的“平衡”是否应该还包括以下两个方面：
一、        饰物的视觉平衡：
YY在这则旧贴中提及（按这里）。许多烟斗都有金属饰物（这里暂不谈其物理作用），也有些烟斗（尤其是北欧一些大师级的）运用了更多材质的饰物：象牙、鱼骨、牛角、黄杨木、琥珀……。
这其中，有些饰物感觉可有可无，或者换个颜色、形状均无伤大雅，但也有一些饰物与烟斗的颜色、形制配合的天衣无缝，给人的感觉是：难以想象如果换个颜色或材质会是什麽效果！因为它太完美了！
当然，亦有许多没有饰物的作品，如果硬要添些饰物，也会给人不伦不类的感觉。
二、        烟道的气流平衡：
neolu兄曾在这个话题中（按这里）有详细论述，在下也表示赞同。烟斗是用来抽的，所以当然风路的设计应该也很重要。配合斗钵直径、容积的大小，在烟道的长短、宽窄等方面应该辅以配合，方能抽的舒服。因为在下个人认为，在保持烟草燃烧状况一致的前提下，抽不同的烟斗（指大小相差不多的），所用气息的强弱应该是差不多的，若相差太大，比如出现 “大马拉小车”的状况就说明风路上的设计有欠缺。


一点粗浅认识，还望同好不吝赐教。

With regards to the smokability of pipes, I feels that it really all depends on the tabacco consumed and the smoker's preference.  Nevertheless, if a pipe draws too much air at a time then obviously that is something very undesirable.  As long as the pipe does not over-heat and the flavour of tobacco is not distorted then I guess all is tolerable.  After all, it is the smoker that draws the smoke and not the pipe.  However, the ability to draw smoothly cannot be stressed more, as pipe-smoking should really be a piece of cake...^^

Your posting on the balance of air-flowing in a pipe really got me think.  Therefore, I did a bit of reading on the web.

It is said that in order to create a smooth flow of air (without causing fine-cut tobacco to travel with the air), an ideal diameter of a draught hole should be between 3.5~4.0 mm (e.g. Don Carlo and Ashton both use 3.5mm as a guide-line while Cavicchi uses 4.0mm).  Though it is very difficult to measure the diameter without the use of tools, however, with practice, this may be achieved with a moderate level of accuracy when inspecting pipes (at least this is what I am hoping for).

Furthermore, the draught hole should be as close to the bottom of the bowl as possible and central too.

Hope that the above info helps you as much as it has hepled me....
