"The Ferndown pipe came into existence in 1983 when Wood left Alfred Dunhill Ltd. to try his hand at creating his own brand.
Quality pipe makers. L. & J.S. Briars is really a pseudonym for Les and Dolly Wood, a husband and wife team who produce a wide spectrum of pipes, most of which are exported to America. Although they make numerous private label pipes for Europe, their premium product is the Ferndown pipe (which gets its name from Wood's house), an oil-cured high grade made from Grecian plateau.
About 90% of the Ferndowns ( which are marketed in Germany under the name Ellwood-for L Wood-get it?) are made in rusticated "Bark" finish and the balance are a smooth "Root" finish.
Especially unusual is the fact that a full 50% of all Ferndowns pipes are mounted in silver or gold.
The reason for all this precious metallurgy is that Les Wood is England's premier silver mounter of briar pipes and is the only pipe maker in Britain with engine turning/mounting facilities in his workshop. "--rarememories.com
"Ferndown pipes by Les Wood embody the revival of English pipe making that was initiated by Ashton in the early 1980s. Oil treated in the tradition of both Dunhill and Ashton, Les Wood pipes are renowned for their pleasant, slightly nutty flavor and remarkable smoking characteristics. About 90% of them are made in rusticated "Bark" finish and the balance are a smooth "Reo" or "Root" finish. Les Wood was the master silver smith at Alfred Dunhill Ltd. before starting L. & J.S. Briars so its not surprising that all of the pipes have silver work. He still does all Dunhill's the silver work. All Ferndown pipes have stems cut from top quality German Vulcanite. They don't seem to discolor.
The Ferndown pipe represents the best of England's "new generation" of quality pipe makers. Production is limited to around 700 pipes a year so we are extremely pleased to able to offer these classic British pipes."----pipes2smoke.com |
