Good to see you post in Chinese again! It really helps your Chinese potential customers know more about your pipes and lessen their fear corresponding/ordering with you.
My name is Leslie and I'm webmaster of PipeVillage. I heard someone, probably a dealer, attempted to give you some advice on making pipes with a slightly more pronounced personal style. It sounds sincere and being rendered out of goodwill. I think a pipe maker receives similar comments all the time, making it just another one of the day.
But unfortunately, Neill Archer Roan seemed to have made this an urban legend, in a thread of his blog on the past Chicago Show, implying the Chinese person whom made the suggestion ignorant, unsophisticated and even rude. We're surprised to see that happen. I guess this has certainly created some negative buzz for you at least around Chinese collectors, a large and vibrant market everyone is tapping into.

Just curious: do yourself indeed think of the guy whom delivered the said advice ridiculous, or he's just trying to help you make better pipes and better sale in a positive and constructive manner? Do yourself appreciate and welcome such advice, or otherwise?
I don't know whom the person really was up till this moment, obviously nor am I knowingly associated with this person.

Thank you for your warm welcome to your pipe forum.
I have been pondering how to respond to your inquiry.I'm a bit confused about how a third party's opinion of a pipe dealer's behavior would cause "negative buzz" about my work.I have no control over what another person thinks.
For the record, I have no problem with receiving constructive criticism of my work.I am always willing to learn.
Having said that, when the dealer started telling me I needed to develop my own style, I realized that he was not very familiar with American pipe makers, or maybe just not with me or my work.I have been told by collectors for quite a few years that they can spot a Rad Davis pipe "from across the room".Anyone who makes a lot of pipes will naturally develop their own style, and I have made a lot of pipes.I enjoy a pretty solid reputation, I think.
I did not find the dealer's comments ridiculous, nor was I offended.I was, however, bemused when he told me that I seemed to be copying Mr. Poul Ilsted's work.I am not that familiar with Mr. Ilsted's work, other than I know he makes fantastic paneled pipes, which I don't make at all.
I hope this clarifies my feelings about the matter for you.

話說回來,在那位斗商說我需要開發,並做出我個人的斗型特色時,我當下直接的想法是也許他對美國製斗人的作品不甚了解,又或許是他對我的作品不甚了解.
這幾年我常聽到收藏家說他們"老遠就看得出瑞德戴維斯的煙斗”.一個不斷在作斗的人會在製斗的過程中找到自己的特色,而我做了不少煙斗,也自認為我多少做出了被斗友們認同的屬於我自己的特色.
那位斗商給我的評語不讓我覺得很荒謬,也不覺得被冒犯.
不過當他說我似乎在抄襲 Poul Ilsted 先生的斗型時這樣的評論讓我很困惑.
我對 Ilsted 先生的作品不是很有研究,不過我知道他做了很多很美的多面斗,而那種設計的煙斗我從沒做過.
我希望我很清楚的為您表達了我對這件事的看法.

We appreciate your explanation on the Chicago anecdote. I found your statement was very much to-the-point.
It seemed to me it turned out to be just another dealer-maker chat around pipe shows, misinterpreted by someone else, for reasons I couldn't fathom out yet. I mentioned "negative buzz" simply because misleading "information" only hurts healthy dynamics in our pipe ecology. I hope there'll be fewer gossips and more direct, positive and constructive communication between every one of us in the pipe world.
I, too, have to laugh if that Chinese dealer commented you seemed to be copying Poul Ilsted's works, though he might have his own perspectives on genres and styles, and it wouldn't get us pregnant to hear about opinions like this . I think sooner or later he'll think of it differently.
I don't know if you know-we have just established a comprehensive review system in our PipeVillage, including entries on manufacturers and artisans: http://review.pipevillage.org . It will grow very big very soon. Members are able to rate and comment their experiences with the subjects. We just talked about the merits of direct communication-you could fill out the intros and contact info by yourself, and you'll be able to address/manage comments and inquiries at your turf entry. :)
